Winter mornings in our house mean an endless search for mitten pairs, the puzzling difficulty of putting boots on the right foot, and the time consuming search for the perfect Winter hat for the day. It is an exhausting process that leaves me flustered and overheated.
Once we get outside, however, I think Winter clothes are some of the cutest kids clothes around. The hats alone are worth starting another Instagram feed.
This week’s a Read a Day theme is Winter Clothing and I have some fun read aloud suggestions!
Book Suggestions for Week Four:
Winter Clothes
Monday: Read a Book about Winter Clothes
Froggy Gets Dressed by Jonathan London
The repetitive language and goofy nature of this Froggy tale makes it a fabulous read aloud. It is snowing outside and Froggy can’t wait to go out and play. He gets dressed in some warm winter gear, but silly Froggy keeps forgetting important parts of the Winter gear. For everyone who has ever dealt with the struggle of getting the little kids dressed will appreciate this story.
Tuesday: Read a Book about Winter Mittens
The Mitten by Jan Brett
This is a classic for a reason. The Mitten tells the story of a group of animals that find a mitten lost in the woods and one by one crawl inside. Jan Brett’s illustrations are delightful and detail the comical coziness of the mitten. One of our favorite parts is the predictive detail in each illustration that tells you what’s coming next. If don’t already have this one on your shelf – I’d say it’s a must have.

Wednesday: Read a Book about Winter Hat
A Hat for Minerva Louise by Janet Morgan Stoeke
This is an older book, but if you can find it I think it’s delightful. Minerva Louise and her hat are just comical and this is a fun one to read aloud.
Thursday: Read a Book about Boots
Eloise Skates! by Kay Thompson
Forgive me, because I realize that Easy Readers and Eloise are not at the top of the awards list, but my kids love these books. I have 2 kindergarteners on the brink of reading and so our library basket is full of Easy Readers and Eloise is a favorite. She is full of spunk and sass and lives in our current hometown of NYC. This Winter adventure is one of our current favorites.
Friday: Read a Book about a Scarf
Lost. Found. By Marsha Diane Arnold
This nearly wordless adventure follows a scarf that is lost and found and lost and found again. As it travels from animal to animal, it gets twisted, tangled and utilized in different and creative ways until it is no longer a scarf but a big ball of yarn. This is such a simple and fun book.
Saturday: Read a Book about Snowmen
First Snow by Bomi Park
This stunningly illustrated book tells the story of a little girl who wakes up to find fresh snow outside. I adore the stark black and white paintings with just a pop of red. It’s a simple wintry adventure story full of snowflakes, snowmen, and imagination.
Sunday Author Spotlight: Alexandra Day
Good Dog, Carl by Alexandra Day
The Carl stories are classics so you have likely picked up one at some point. They are delightful board book adventures to read to babies and toddlers. There is a whole series of sweet wordless Carl stories to choose from but this is the original.
