My twins gravitate towards silly books right now.
They are gaga for Dog Man.
They cozy up and giggle over Garfield collections.
They laugh out loud at worries of Scarredy Squirrel.
With the Christmas season upon us though our basket of carefully picked out, long beloved Christmas titles is not really leaning towards their silly preference.
Christmas books are often reviewed or described with words like “heartwarming” and “cozy” not laugh-out-loud funny.
Now I want to be clear, we will still be opening and enjoying a holiday book for the entire month of December. We will be reading The Polar Express and sipping hot cocoa. We will still be reading The Night Before Christmas – all 5 versions that I have collected.
But I also want to honor their delight for silly – so this is my story time for my twins and all other kids who love a good laugh – no matter what season it might be.

Aliens Love Panta Claus Story Time
This story time was first inspired by Aliens Love Panta Claus and the way it captured this silly spirit my kids love in picture books. The goal of this story time is silly fun and lots of giggles.

Books to Read Aloud
These are books that are all some level of silly, but also Christmas themed. I started our list with Aliens Love Panta Claus because it is definitely the most ridiculous of the bunch and the one my twins, of course, laughed at the most. It is the one that guided much of our activities for after you read at the bottom of this post.
All of these Christmas tales are full of mischief, humor, and still the wonderful spirit of Christmas joy.
Aliens Love Panta Claus
by Claire Freedman & Ben Cort
This is one of the silliest Christmas stories we have read. Aliens, who happen to love underpants, land and decide to give Santa Claus a hand. There is a lot of colorful underwear and silly Christmas fun.
Olivia Helps with Christmas
by Ian Falconer
Getting ready for Christmas Olivia style – with lots of tangles and accidents.
Ninja Claus!
by Arree Chung
In this ninja adventure, Maxwell the little ninja is determined to use his skills to catch a glimpse of Santa Claus. Unfortunately for him Santa has some ninja skills of his own. If you love the other ninja books like my twins do this one does not disappoint.
The Princess and the Christmas Rescue
By Caryl Hart
A princess who tinkers and saves Christmas? Hard to beat. This one is a little less silly – but it’s spirited and amusing. We loved the feisty princess character and gentle digs at other princess stories. The rhyming text and bright illustrations are also fun. A romping Christmas tale.

Silly Santa Table Activity
I love setting out easy Morning Invitations (now often Snack Invitations) for my twins. These are super simple activities they can do on their own that are a fun way to slowly start the day or our afternoon.
We did this one after school earlier in December after reading Aliens Love Panta Claus.
Materials
- Underwear Printable (download printable here)
- Markers
- Scissors
- Hole Punch (optional)
- Ornament Hooks or Yarn (optional)
- Construction paper (optional)
- Contact Paper (optional)
Set Up
Set up a space for each kid to work with an Underwear Printable and markers. Have the other materials nearby if you’re planning to turn your underwear into ornaments.
Activity
Share with your kids that you’re going to make Christmas underpants for Santa and his Alien friends.
Note: You can also write this on a note for older kids if you’re leaving this out as an invitation for them to do on their own.
The directions are pretty simple – color!
I put red and green markers on the table to encourage Christmas colors, but feel free to make them as festive or colorful as you’d like. My kids have free access to a cart of art materials so they ran over to get yellow for stars and other colors they needed for their ideas.
They also grabbed some glitter markers – one of our current favorites. They love the glittery shimmer, I love that they’re a non-messy glitter option.
We like to do things with our coloring – either add it to our art wall, cut out images for cards, or in this case make ornaments.
If you want to make them into ornaments:
- Cut out your favorite pairs of underpants.
- Optional: trace and cut out a piece of construction paper to use as a backing.
- Laminate or cover with contact paper to increase durability.
- Punch a hole through the top.
- Attach an ornament hook or piece of ribbon/yarn.
These are goofy ornaments for sure. My kids each hung a couple on the little trees they have in their room.
