Book Suggestions for Week 3
Monday: Read a Book with the Letter B
We’re Going on a Bear Hunt by Michael Rosen
You might recognize this one from my Bear Story Time post, but it’s one of those books you can’t read too many time. I adore Helen Oxenbury’s illustrations and the text is full of excellent words, repetitive phrases that often include the letter B, and building tension. A family is going on a bear hunt, which includes all kinds of positional vocabulary, but what will happen when they ultimately find a bear? Fun book for story time!
Tuesday: Read a Book about Snow
Outside by Deirdre Gill
Whenever I think of snow I envision shoveling and wet, cold toes. Outside, however, is a stunning book that reminds adults and celebrates with children the magic of snow. A young boy heads out into a winter wonderland and is soon creating imaginary creatures, building castles, and having adventures. At its climax, Outside is a dramatic visual exclamation of the joy in imaginative play.
Wednesday: Read a Version of The Wheels on the Bus
The Wheels on the Bus by Paul O Zelinsky
The gorgeous colorful illustrations are what makes this our favorite version of The Wheels on the Bus. There are a lot of fun variations of this song. This follows the traditional lyrics, but is the illustrations are full of life and diversity and details that engross my kids.
Thursday: Have Tea + Read a Book
My kids like Honey Tea. Warm water in a mug with a dash of honey and a couple drops of lemon.
Friday: Read a Book about Winter
Waiting for Winter by Sebastian Meschenmoser
Deer tells Squirrel that he thinks it is about to snow. Squirrel, who usually hibernates, is intrigued by this idea of snow and decides to wait. As he waits…and waits…and waits, he talks Hedgehog and Bear into joining his snow watch. Together, as they try to stay awake for the big event, they start to hypothesize about snow. One by one they find things they think must be snow, a toothbrush, a tin can, and a sock that hold many of the properties of snow. Finally, however, the real thing appears and its unlike anything they’ve ever seen. The story is amusing because of the characters and their seemingly preposterous ideas about what snow might be, however, the true art here is the illustrations. The limited words pull the story together, but the illustrations are what carry the emotion, relationship, and ultimate magic of Winter. The perfect story about waiting and Winter for this snowy time of year.
Saturday: Read a Book about Your Child’s Favorite Animal
Fiction or non-fiction. I have a feeling we will be reading a book about baby animals.
Sunday Author Spotlight: Read a Book by Ezra Jack Keats
The Snowy Day by Ezra Jack Keats
This is an award winning classic so I probably don’t need to explain that it follows sweet little Peter on his snowy day adventures. This is Ezra Jack Keats’ first picture book and it’s just perfection. Simple and sweet with delicious words and dreamy illustrations. We did a whole story time about this book.
