Book Suggestions for Week 7

Monday: Listen to an Audio Book

Most libraries have books on CD that you can borrow. We also own several that we use at home and in the car – you can see the list of our favorites in this post.

Tuesday: Look for Words to Read in the Kitchen

I, of course, LOVE to read books to my kids – but as part of this challenge I also want to encourage you to look for other opportunities for reading throughout your home, day, and life. Reading this type of environmental print helps your child understand the great importance of learning to read. Reading is fun and there is a wonderful world of stories available to you when you know how to read, but reading is also useful.

Wednesday: Read a Book about Love

Groggle’s Monster Valentine by Diana Murray

This is a new Valentine’s book I had the pleasure of reading and reviewing in January. My kids loved sweet Groggle and laughed at the hilarious monster problems in this story. If your kids like silly this is a good Valentine’s read aloud for you.

Thursday: Read a Book by Flashlight

A Shine-a-Light Book such as On The Train

Okay, reading a book by flashlight could literally just be you curled up in the dark somewhere reading any book by flashlight. BUT if you want to have a little extra fun – try one of these inventive books from the A Shine – A – Light series. Half of the pages have a translucent quality that when you shine a flashlight from behind the page a secret image shines through. My kids LOVE these. We love this train one, but we’ve also loved the human body one, the seashore one, and more.

Friday: Read the Biggest Book on Your Shelf

Saturday: Read a Book with the Letter D

Fun Dog, Sun Dog by Deborah Heiligman

I’m dreaming of sunshine guys so this is a good book for me right now. It’s also a cute, brief, playful book about a dog’s day at the beach with his owner that’s a good read aloud for toddlers and up pretty much any day. As a bonus, there is a D on every page.

Sunday Author Spotlight: Anna Dewdney

Anna Dewdney popped onto the scene in a big way with Llama Llama Red Pajama when my kids were tiny. Her delightful llama character rides the emotional rollercoaster that all little kids do on a daily basis in his sweet, ordinary adventures.  If you have a toddler or preschooler and you haven’t read a Llama Llama book, please do. They are a delight. We love the original but they are all good. Mama Llama Misses Mama is also another favorite. If however you have read those already, I encourage you to put Little Excavator on your list. Dewdney was preparing for its release when she passed away at the end of last year and it is set to come out in June. She was a beloved author who truly understood this youngest age group. She is missed.
