My preschoolers have been thinking about their Halloween costumes since July. Some are easy to picture – an elephant, Cinderella, or a Construction Worker. Others, like a Veterinarian Astronaut, are a little trickier to envision. Bi g and small, I love their imaginations when it comes to planning their Halloween costumes.
As luck turns out, amid the pumpkin books and witches riding broom books, there are several children’s books that also discuss this Halloween costume dilemma. This story time embraces this topic and gets those little wheels spinning.

Halloween Costumes Story Time for Preschoolers
I always like to start a story time with a hello song and end with a goodbye song. In between, we read great books, sing a couple of songs, and introduce the table invitation for after story time.

Ladybug Girl and the Dress Up Dilemma by David Soman and Jacky Davis

Birdie’s Happiest Halloween by Sujean Rim
This is my absolute favorite Halloween book this year. Birdie is another delightful and strong character. Birdie is in the hunt for the perfect Halloween costume. Her mind is swirling with ideas, but none of them feel quite right until she visits an exhibit of famous people at the museum with her mom. Suddenly she has the perfect idea and surprises everyone on Halloween night. Find on Amazon
Not a Box by Antoinette Portis
Admittedly, this is not a book about Halloween costumes. It is, however, a wonderful book about creativity and costumes of a kind. In the brief text and sparse illustrations, Portis paints a beautiful picture of imagination. It might look like a box, but in fact this is a rocket ship, race car, and more. This book proves a box can truly be so very much more. Find on Amazon

This is one Halloween costume even I could make!
Haha right?! My kids ended up making costumes with smaller boxes for their favorite stuffed animal. It was pretty cute.
