Colors are another one of those key concepts that we hope kids will master in their first few years. Similar to learning shapes I also love to talk about colors with picture books.
How could you not when illustrations are bursting with beautiful colors?
The list below is perfect for a week of colors unit or for getting ideas of color books for any time of the year. It was originally shared as part of our A Read A Day challenge – you can read details are in this intro post.

Books About the
Colors of the Rainbow
Llama Llama Red Pajama by Anna Dewdney
This one is a bestseller because it is just so well constructed. The words are perfectly paired with the text and there is so much emotion and love oozing from the pages. Llama is every darling impatient kid under 5 and his mom is the loving patient mama we all wish we could be every day.
It’s an Orange Aardvark! by Michael Hall
There are so many awesome books out there that I fear I sometimes over use the word “love” a touch, but I LOVE this book. In general I think Michael Hall is a genius, but as fun and creative as his other books are this is my favorite. My kids would wholeheartedly agree if they could stop falling off their chair in laughter.
Yellow Ball by Molly Bang
There is something so reassuring about Molly Bang’s approach to storytelling. This story is an adventure of the yellow ball bobbing around the ocean variety but you walk away with this warm feeling.
Green by Laura Vaccaro Seeger
This one is a major award winner and it is the illustrations that I believe push it over the edge. The concept however is inventive and leaves you thinking about the color green in a whole new light.
Baby Bear Sees Blue by Ashley Wolff
Truth be told Baby Bear sees much more than just blue in this colorful story. It is a fun exploration of color. A perfect color book for toddlers.
Harold and the Purple Crayon by Crockett Johnson
The 60th Anniversary stamp on the covers says it all. This is a classic. The kind that is passed down from generation to generation. Each parent hoping it will inspire the creativity and imagination in their child that Harold and his crayon once sparked in them.
What Makes a Rainbow (A Magic Ribbon Book) by Betty Ann Schwartz
This book is simply darling. It is a pleasant book about colors but what makes it magical are the ribbons that are added on each page creating a rainbow at the end. From toddlers and up, this is one kids want to read again and again.
